DIY Disney's Frozen Inspired Hand Knit Socks

I have been wanting to make a pair of men's socks for a while now, and had been playing with the idea of themeing them to Kristoff from Frozen. And when I walked into a local yarn shop in Maryland and saw this lovely sparkly grey yarn, I knew I had found exactly what I needed. Now, not too many men will wear the sparkly yarn (which doesn't show up so well in the photos, but is really pretty in person), but this pattern would be fantastic in a muted grey as well. You know, for that less flashy Ice Master.

I made this pattern up, but if you have experience knitting socks and wanted to make your own pair, I have all the details on my Ravelry page. Just use a basic sock pattern as a reference. And if you do knit up a pair be prepared to be amazed at just how quickly they will come together. I did the pair of these in a week flat. That's lightening speed for me! I could easily see making these as gifts for that reason alone.

Welcome to the EAC Disney Inspired Hand Knit Socks

Welcome to the EAC, Dude! I've been hanging on the this sock yarn for longer than I'd like to admit. I often see beautiful hand painted yarn, snap it up, and then wonder how I can use it. It doesn't show off intricate patterns too well, so you have to be somewhat picky in the choice of socks you are going to knit. This is true of self-striping yarn as well, although that's the beauty of the self-striping stuff. You can knit a plain old vanilla sock and get something that looks amazing.

I finally found a pattern that fits this beautiful hand painted yarn. It reminds me of the scene in Finding Nemo where Crush welcomes Marlin and Dory to the EAC! The pattern sort of swirls around the legs a bit without distorting or pooling the colors. And oh how I LOVE these colors!

I also fell in love with this pattern for two reasons. The first is that this was a very easy pattern to memorize. This is wonderful for knitting on the go. The second is that I was able to alter this pattern very easily to accommodate my very curvy calves. The pattern comes in four sizes and the chart was very easy to modify going from the larger size for my calves, to the smaller size for the rest of the sock. DIY Hand Knit Pocahontas Riverbend Socks

Love how simple and easy these socks are to knit up. I have made them twice before and just love them. The pattern is inspired by the Kalajoki River in Finland and it reminded me of one of my favorite songs from Disney's Pocahontas: Just Around The Riverbend. I found my perfect river colored yarn from Madelinetosh and I was off and running, or uh, knitting.

The pattern is only worked over a series of 16 stitches, and and rest is stockinette. I can't tell you how quickly this knit up! And even better, the toes are not grafted! I may, in fact, be the world's worst grafter. I cannot keep straight where I am in the that god-forsaken Kirchner stitch! But with this pattern, I didn't have to! All the better. And finally, it's a nice pattern for self-striping or variegated yarns. Sometimes the patterns don't show up too well on those, but this pattern is big enough that it works with these yarns. If you do decide to knit it, realize that it won't look this pretty on the needles; in needs to stretch out to really reveal itself. It's just a little bit magic that way!

DIY Disney's Cinderella Castle Inspired Hand-Knit Socks

Time for another Disney inspired sock pattern! These socks were inspired by the gothic patterns on Cinderella's Castle in Walt Disney World. This is not my original pattern, but when I saw it, I was immediately reminded of the back of the castle - the view from the Carousel. I also knew I wanted to make them in this royal purple color.   I had been saving this lovely yarn for a special pattern. This was definitely the right one!

These socks were easy to knit and a welcome change after those intricate Dumbo socks last month! I was able to complete these in about two weeks. (A much more reasonable time frame for me!) I love the way they turned out. I think even Cinderella would be pleased! And since our weather is still a bit iffy (even snowy!), I can wear them a bit longer before they need to be retired to the sock drawer for the summer!

DIY Dumbo Inspired Knitted Socks

Even though we are finally finding our way to warmer weather, I'm still knitting cozy Disney inspired socks. Some of my best knitting time is on a road trip while the littles are buckled into their seats with no where to go! These adorable Dumbo inspired socks were knit on our recent road trip to Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort. I love them so much, but this particular pair was a sock knitting adventure for me!

I had never attempted toe-up socks prior to knitting these. I always knit mine from the cuff down, simply because that's how I learned to do it. But when I saw this super cute pattern from Urki Gurki (I know, don't you love it??), I knew it was time to learn how to knit a toe-up sock. After all, I knew how to do it the other way; how hard could it be? And for the most part, it was pretty simple.

The pattern was easy to follow, the two-color knitting was easy enough to do, but the heel. OH! the heel! I knit, ripped out and re-knit that heel four times! I finally managed to get it knit because I needed these Dumbo socks in my life. Who wouldn't? But don't ask me to knit a pair for you because these socks are going in the looky-what-I-did-hall-of-fame, never to be knit again! Well, maybe not never; I think I'll try a different, (ahem, less complicated!) toe-up pattern next time, just to get the hang of this type of heel. Maybe then I could conquer these socks again. We'll see. For now, I'm just thrilled they are off the needles and in the sock drawer! Knitting these socks for a full month had me dreaming about them. Time for something much less complicated.

DIY Disney's Tangled Socks (and modified pattern)

I just can't help myself; I'm a sock knitter. I have loads of sock yarn stocked up in my stash. It's so easy to purchase just a skein or two and know you have a project just waiting to happen. In fact, I have so much sock yarn that I have created my own self-imposed sock knitting club. I've put all those fabulous skeins of yarn in ziplock baggies with patterns and needles so I don't have to think about the next pair; all I have to do is just grab a bag and go!

This pattern, however, was not my thing. I'd never done intarsia in the round and it was way to much to think about with the little people running around the cottage. I need my knitting to be uncomplicated at the moment! So I did some major altering to this pattern. In fact, I practically rewrote it for knitting in the round and using duplicate stitch. If you are interested in that sort of thing, you can read all about it on my Ravelry project page. For those of you non-knitters, I'll spare you the details!

Suffice it to say, these socks reminded me of Tangled when I saw the pattern. And with the right colors, they are perfect! It makes me happy to know I have Rapunzel themed socks on under my boots, even if no one else knows! The mock cable looks like a braid and the flowers were done up in sparkly yarn scraps. The perfect combination for a little Tangled pattern!

DIY Disney's Wonderland Caterpillar Socks

There is no denying it's been a VERY chilly winter, and let's face it; many of us have been spending an inordinate amount of time indoors due to the inhospitable temperatures outside. Due to such unexpected circumstances, I have been spending a great deal of time knitting. And my favorite sort of knitting is socks. One can never have too many pairs of hand-knit socks. If you have never tried a pair, you are sorely missing out! They are simply divine. And I love having socks that actually fit my oddly shaped feet.

These fun little circle socks by Anne Campbell reminded me instantly of the Caterpillar in Alice and Wonderland. I knew they would be next on my list. I'm a fan of self-striping yarn; in fact, I have oodles of it. But it's hard to see intricate patterns on it once it's knit up. I really like how this pattern stands out on the stripes. When I first saw it, I thought it might be hard to memorize, but boy was I wrong! These socks came together within two weeks, and that's with limited knitting time with the two littles! 

The other wonderful thing about these socks is that there is no grafted toe. I am terrible at grafting - it may have something to do with the fact that I am constantly needing to put down my knitting in the middle of grafting. No matter the reason, I was delighted to try this star toe. I may have found my new favorite bind off! If you are on Ravelry you can find my project details here. Mickey Mouse Fair Isle Sock Pattern & Chart

It's definitely been a cold winter for most of us so far. And I for one, like to battle that cold with hot tea, a warm fire and a toasty pair of warm wool socks, handmade socks if I can get them. In fact, sock knitting is one of my obsessions (when I don't have tiny people pulling on my yarn). I love a small project that I can take on the road. And these sweet socks were started on our last Disney vacation! The perfect sort of knitting for that road trip.

This is my original pattern and chart, available for personal use only. You can download a copy of my Mickey Mouse Sock Pattern if you'd like one. Fair warning though, I wrote the pattern for my own personal reference and I am the only one who has knit from it. It has not been "tested" so to speak and the details for kitting up the toe and several other small details seem to be off, but honestly, I don't have time to figure it out. Knit at your own risk!

It's a simple fair isle pattern and I like how the pattern is only at the top of the sock, so your toes don't have to battle the strings when you slip your foot into the rest of the sock. For those interested parties, I used Knit Pick's stroll in Barn and Black to complete this project. I'm hoping these little warm fuzzies will get me through to seed ordering time, when Spring becomes a reality and life abundant is not too far away.

DIY Disney Inspired Socks

Imagination by Knit Picks

I love knitting socks. I love it so much I attended a sock knitting convention two summers ago. Seriously. So when Knit Picks introduced it's sock yarn line, Imagination, I was beyond smitten! But socks take time to knit, and unless you have lots of road tripping time, that is hard to come by in this neck of the woods right now. So instead of knitting and presenting the sock to you, I thought I'd present my best ideas for this new sock yarn and let you do the knitting (or dreaming with me!).

Let me just say, this yarn is so beautiful. There is a colorway for everyone's liking. And the blend is a Merino/Alpaca with a touch of nylon. I can only imagine how soft it must feel. That's my favorite thing about hand-knitted socks: how utterly comfortable they are. Once you start you won't go back, trust me. And hand-knit socks are usually a welcome gift!

But on to the socks! First up is Enchanted Forest. These would be a lovely tribute to Snow White or Sleeping Beauty growing up in the forests of their youths. I would absolutely knit Bacchus socks with this yarn. I love all the bobbles on the trees!

Second, how about a tribute to The Little Mermaid with Mermaid Lagoon and Johnson's Wave socks? I love the colors of the Mermaid Lagoon socks. So beautiful. (It also seems to me that there are really Sully colored. I'm sure there's a pattern out there just right for Monsters U!)

Finally, I love the idea of some Alice in Wonderland socks. So I paired Looking Glass with these Vorticity socks. They remind me of the topsy turvy experience of Alice being in wonderland, and the spin down the rabbit hole.
